What exactly is academic assessment, and why are we all spending so much time and effort wrestling with it?

In a nutshell:  Assessment is a continual and intentional process that seeks to answer important ongoing questions like:

1. What do we want our students to learn?

2. How will we know when they have learned it?

3. How can we improve our teaching and their learning?
